We have seen a house for sale for £185,000 and we are very keen on but we've just discovered that it is leasehold. There are 928 years outstanding so a lease extension is not required. We didn't know what this meant but the internet suggests we wouldn't own the land or property, just the lease to live there. Is this correct? We wouldn't want to pay a mortgage for 25 years without the house being ours. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Me and my husband have owned a leasehold flat for around twenty years. There are 75 years unexpired lease on the lease. Following a year of difficult negotiations through my conveyancing practitioners and, mainly, surveyor I now have an offer from the landlord. Her valuer has provided a figure of £8,000, but has increased this by £2,000 at the drop of a hat. My valuer has recommended a much higher premium. Negotiations have broken down so it looks at though we need to go to LVT. If a lease extension does go to a FTT, can I deal with this myself, just armed with the valuations I have? If not, what costs would I be likely to incur?
