Questions and Answers: Axmouth and Branscombe Lease Extensions
We have seen a house for sale for £195k and we are very keen on but we've just found out that it is leasehold. There are 899 years unexpired so a lease extension is not a concern. We didn't know what this meant but the internet suggests we wouldn't own the land or property, just the lease to live there. Is this correct? We wouldn't want to pay a mortgage for 25 years without owning the property. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I will soon view a two bedroom apartment, although not exactly my ideal property it has enough positives to suit me very well for my present situation. However after obtaining a copy of the title I've learnt that it only has 55 years balance left on the lease. It is also a repo so I'm assuming that the bank will not be interested in doing a lease extension. My main concern is would the short lease make it difficult to secure a mortgage?
What will it cost me and what is the best way to start the lease extension process? I have around 66 years unexpired lease on my lease on a studio flat in Axmouth and Branscombe. I have emailed the agent who represent the freeholder and they sent me the number of the valuer. I telephone the valuer but I am not receiving any calls back.

My OH and I are considering purchasing a one bedroom apartment in Axmouth and Branscombe which is a leasehold. I am wanting to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of that - what happens when lease ends, the cost of a lease extension, can the freeholder of the land evict me from my own flat and prevent me from having a lease extension?
If a leaseholder owns a flat with a lease of under 80 years, they can afford the lease extension by borrowing the funds against the property, and the value of the flat with the new lease will more than cover the cost of the extension, then is there any justification for not doing it?
